What Are The Benefits of a Pitched Roof Pergola?

A pitched roof pergola is one of the most popular types of pergolas in the world. Not only does this type of pergola look fantastic, there are many other benefits to building a pitched roof pergola over a flat roof pergola.

1. A pitched roof pergola creates the appeal that there is more space under the roof and that it is higher.

2. Pitched roof pergolas can provide a little more protection from the sun than a flat roof pergola.

3. Pitched roof pergolas give a sense of a more enclosed room as if you have an additional area for your house.

4. Hot air rises to the apex of a pitched roof so therefore is cooler where you're sitting.

5. You can attach a water tank to the gutter of the pergola and catch the rain water.

Why are Pergolas Are a Popular Choice For Pool Shelters?

Pergolas are becoming increasingly popular to use as a pool shelter. This is because it is a structure that lasts and can give you an area to get out of the sun for awhile or watch your children playing in the pool. It can also be a cost effective way and alternative to shade sails for shelter. Here are some reasons why building a pergola near your pool is a valuable assest:

1. We have to ensure that there is enough space to build a pergola in your area. Otherwise the pergola may need to be outside the fenced area of the pool.

2. We need to think about the size of the pergola so that we can maximise your space. A large pergola in a small area will make your backyard look overcrowded.

3. Pergola designs and colours can also match your house and landscaping to complement your pool. You can even deck it out with some lounges and bean bags as your very own retreat.

4. A storage area/container can be created under your pergola to store all of your pool equipment.

5. By having a pergola you are creating an outdoor entertaining area. But what entertaining is complete without an outdoor kitchen? Your pergola also serves as some shelter for your outdoor kitchen.

What are the Benefits of a Flat Roof Pergola?

Flat roof pergolas are as the name states, flat. The whole pergola is all one level across the board. There are a few benefits to building a flat roof pergola:

1. A flat roof pergola is generally more cost effective than a pitched roof pergola.

2. A flat roof pergola is quicker to construct than a pitched roof pergola.

3. A narrow flat roof pergola looks better in smaller backyards to simplify and maximise the space.

4. Flat roof pergolas have overcome their head height issues with the introduction of extenda brackets to give you extra height in the pergola.

5. Although there is only a very small slant on a flat roof pergola, guttering can still be installed so that rain water is caught into a water tank.

Did You Know That Scissor Trusses Can Be Used For Your Pergola?

Many of my clients who have wanted a pitched roof pergola have never heard of a scissor truss. Scissor trusses have many advantages when using them for a pergola:

1. Scissor trusses are more commonly used in big span pergolas. Scissor trusses can span further without using big bulky beams that sometimes overshadow the area of the pergola (the bigger the pergola the bigger the beams - scissor trusses rectify this issue).

2. Your pergola will still have a pitched roof effect.

3. You will have more head room on the pergola because there are no horizontal rafters taking up the space.

4. In some cases scissor trusses can be a cheaper option than a pitched roof pergola.

5. Scissor trusses can be custom built for your pergola to suit various designs.

How to Choose The Type of Wood For Your Deck

Choosing the type of wood for your deck is based on many factors. We typically reccomend merbau as it is the cheapest hardwood and looks amazing on your deck. Treated pine is used for the budget conscious but is not reccomended for a deck as it may not last as long, it is high maintenance and it twists and buckles in the weather. When choosing the type of wood for your deck you will need to consider the following:

1. Budget - are you happy to have a softwood deck for now even though it may not last as long? Or would you rather spend a little more on your deck and have something that generally lasts longer, holds it's shape and colour?

2. Outdoor furniture - have you decided what outdoor furniture you would like on your deck? This can change the type of wood you use based on colour. Bare in mind that you can change the colour of the wood with a stain.

3. Do you want to use a hardwood or softwood for your deck? Once again the hardwood is better lasting for your deck.

4. Do you want to match the timber for your deck to the timber on the house? Remember if it's not the right colour wood you can always stain it too.
